Travel Safety & Tips
Travel Smart. Stay Safe. Experience More.
South Africa is a spectacular destination filled with diverse cultures, breathtaking landscapes, vibrant cities and extraordinary wildlife. Like any international destination, however, a safe and enjoyable journey starts with good preparation.
At Jaribu Tours & Safaris, we want you to explore with confidence. These practical travel safety tips will help you prepare for your journey, protect your belongings, respect local communities and make the most of your experience in South Africa and beyond.
Our advice: Stay informed, follow local guidance, listen to your guide and use common sense throughout your journey.
Before You Travel
A little preparation can make a big difference.
Check Your Travel Documents
Before travelling, make sure you have:
- A valid passport;
- Any required visa or entry permit;
- Appropriate travel insurance;
- Flight and accommodation confirmations;
- Emergency contact information;
- Copies of important travel documents; and
- Any permits or documentation required for your specific journey.
Keep digital copies of important documents securely stored separately from the originals.
Check Entry Requirements
Entry requirements can vary depending on your nationality, destination and purpose of travel.
If you are travelling internationally or across Southern African borders, check the latest requirements with the relevant government or immigration authorities before departure.
Jaribu can provide general travel guidance, but travellers remain responsible for ensuring that their travel documents meet the applicable requirements.
Travel Insurance
We strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance before travelling to South Africa or elsewhere in Southern Africa.
Depending on the policy, travel insurance may provide protection for:
- Medical emergencies;
- Trip cancellation;
- Trip interruption;
- Lost or delayed luggage;
- Travel delays;
- Emergency evacuation;
- Personal belongings; and
- Other unexpected events.
Make sure your policy covers the activities included in your itinerary, particularly if you plan to participate in hiking, adventure activities, safari experiences or other outdoor activities.
Personal Safety in South Africa
South Africa offers remarkable travel experiences, but visitors should take sensible precautions, particularly in busy urban areas.
Stay Aware of Your Surroundings
When exploring cities and tourist areas:
- Stay aware of your surroundings;
- Keep valuables secure and discreet;
- Avoid displaying large amounts of cash or expensive equipment unnecessarily;
- Use established transportation services;
- Follow advice from your guide or local host;
- Avoid isolated areas, particularly after dark; and
- Keep important documents and valuables secure.
Do not assume that a busy tourist area is automatically risk-free.
Travelling Around Cities
When visiting destinations such as Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban, Pretoria and other urban areas, use reputable transportation and follow local guidance.
For tours booked with Jaribu, we will provide appropriate pickup and meeting-point information.
We Recommend
- Confirm your pickup location before departure;
- Keep your phone charged;
- Save Jaribu’s contact details;
- Follow your guide’s instructions;
- Avoid accepting unsolicited transportation services;
- Keep vehicle doors locked where appropriate; and
- Never leave valuables visible inside a vehicle.
If you are exploring independently, ask your accommodation provider or a trusted local professional about areas and transportation options appropriate for your plans.
Using ATMs & Handling Money
South Africa has a modern banking and payment system, and cards are widely accepted.
Nevertheless, sensible precautions are recommended.
When Using ATMs
- Prefer ATMs located inside reputable banks, shopping centres or secure locations;
- Be aware of your surroundings;
- Never accept unsolicited assistance at an ATM;
- Shield your PIN;
- Take your card and cash before leaving;
- Avoid withdrawing large amounts unnecessarily; and
- Contact your bank immediately if your card is lost or compromised.
Notify your bank before international travel if required by your card provider.
Protect Your Passport & Important Documents
Your passport is one of your most important travel documents.
We recommend:
- Keeping your passport secure;
- Carrying a photocopy or secure digital copy;
- Keeping emergency contact information separately;
- Avoiding leaving your passport unattended;
- Using hotel or accommodation safes where appropriate; and
- Checking your passport before leaving accommodation, vehicles and tour locations.
Never hand your passport or personal documents to an unknown person unless there is a legitimate reason to do so.
Safari & Wildlife Safety
A South African safari can be one of the most memorable experiences of your life.
But remember:
Wild animals are wild animals.
Even animals that appear calm, familiar or harmless can be unpredictable.
During a Safari
Always:
- Follow your guide’s instructions;
- Remain inside the vehicle unless your guide specifically tells you it is safe to exit;
- Keep a safe distance from wildlife;
- Avoid loud noises;
- Do not feed animals;
- Do not attempt to attract animals;
- Do not attempt to touch wildlife;
- Keep your hands and body inside the vehicle when instructed; and
- Respect park and reserve regulations.
Never Leave the Vehicle Without Permission
In many safari environments, leaving the vehicle can expose you to significant danger.
Your guide understands the environment and will advise you when and where it is safe to leave the vehicle.
Safari Accommodation Safety
If you are staying at a lodge, tented camp or safari accommodation:
- Follow the property’s safety instructions;
- Keep doors and windows secured as instructed;
- Do not approach wildlife around the property;
- Do not walk around after dark unless the accommodation permits it and appropriate arrangements are made;
- Use designated paths and areas; and
- Follow guide or ranger instructions.
Hiking & Outdoor Activities
South Africa offers spectacular hiking and outdoor experiences.
Before participating in an outdoor activity:
- Check the weather;
- Wear suitable footwear;
- Carry sufficient water;
- Protect yourself from the sun;
- Follow marked routes;
- Stay with your group;
- Follow your guide’s instructions;
- Avoid taking unnecessary risks; and
- Tell your guide if you feel unwell or unable to continue.
Never underestimate changing weather conditions, especially in mountainous or remote environments.
Sun, Heat & Hydration
South African sunshine can be intense, particularly during summer.
We recommend:
- Drinking sufficient water;
- Wearing sunscreen;
- Wearing a hat or other sun protection;
- Wearing suitable lightweight clothing;
- Taking breaks when necessary; and
- Avoiding prolonged exposure to extreme heat.
Stay hydrated throughout long drives, hikes and outdoor activities.
Weather & Seasonal Conditions
South Africa’s climate varies significantly between regions.
Weather can change quickly, particularly in mountainous, coastal and wilderness areas.
Before travelling:
- Check the forecast;
- Dress appropriately for the season;
- Carry an additional layer when necessary;
- Prepare for possible rain;
- Follow your guide’s advice; and
- Be prepared for itinerary changes when weather affects safety.
Some wildlife and outdoor experiences are seasonal, so expectations should be based on the nature of the destination rather than guaranteed sightings or conditions.
Health & Wellness
Before travelling, consider speaking with a qualified healthcare professional about your destination and planned activities.
Depending on your itinerary, you may wish to discuss:
- Routine vaccinations;
- Destination-specific health recommendations;
- Prescription medication;
- Allergies;
- Travel sickness;
- Sun exposure;
- Insect protection; and
- Medical insurance.
Bring Essential Medication
If you take prescription medication:
- Carry enough for your journey;
- Keep medication in appropriate packaging;
- Carry documentation where necessary;
- Keep important medication accessible during travel; and
- Avoid packing essential medication only in checked luggage.
Malaria & Mosquito Precautions
Some parts of Southern Africa, including certain safari destinations, are malaria-risk areas.
Malaria risk varies according to location, season and current conditions.
If your itinerary includes a malaria-risk area, obtain current medical advice before travelling.
Practical precautions may include:
- Using insect repellent;
- Wearing appropriate clothing, particularly around dusk and dawn;
- Using accommodation mosquito protection where provided; and
- Following professional medical advice regarding malaria prevention.
Important: Do not rely solely on general website information for medical decisions. Consult a qualified healthcare professional for advice appropriate to your itinerary.
Food & Water
South Africa has a wide variety of excellent food and dining experiences.
To reduce the risk of illness:
- Drink water from safe and reputable sources;
- Wash your hands regularly;
- Use hand sanitiser where appropriate;
- Take additional care with food if you have specific dietary or medical requirements;
- Inform restaurants and tour operators about serious food allergies; and
- Follow local and professional health advice.

- Keeping your booking confirmation accessible;
- Downloading important travel information before departure; and
- Ensuring your phone can access mobile data or Wi-Fi where required.
For remote safari destinations, mobile coverage may be limited or unavailable.
Protect Your Belongings
Keep your personal belongings under control throughout your journey.
Pay particular attention to:
- Passport;
- Wallet;
- Bank cards;
- Mobile phone;
- Camera;
- Laptop;
- Jewellery;
- Medication; and
- Other valuables.
Avoid leaving valuables unattended in vehicles, restaurants, public areas or accommodation rooms.

- People;

- Religious and cultural practices;
- Museums and heritage sites;
- Wildlife;
- Private property; and
- Photography restrictions.
Always ask permission before taking close-up photographs of people, particularly children.
At some museums, memorials and heritage sites, photography may be restricted.

- Avoiding isolated areas after dark;
- Keeping your phone charged;
- Staying aware of your surroundings; and
- Following local advice.
Consider joining organised tours when visiting unfamiliar areas.
