1. Pickup from Your Accommodation
Your Jaribu guide and private vehicle will collect you from your hotel, apartment, residence or other agreed location in Johannesburg or Pretoria.
After a brief introduction to the day's experience, travel towards Gold Reef City in southern Johannesburg.
2. Gold Reef City — Johannesburg's Gold-Rush Heritage
Arrive at Gold Reef City, located in the historic mining area of Johannesburg.
Gold was discovered in the region in 1886, attracting migrants from across southern Africa and beyond and helping transform Johannesburg into a major city. The gold-mining industry also played a significant role in shaping the city's social and economic history.
Your experience begins with Jozi's Story of Gold, Gold Reef City's heritage attraction.
3. Jozi's Story of Gold — Mine Experience
Go beneath the surface and discover what life was like during Johannesburg's historic gold-mining era.
The heritage experience takes visitors approximately 75 metres underground, offering an insight into the mining processes, working conditions and history associated with the gold rush.
Your guide will help put the experience into context, explaining how the discovery of gold influenced the growth of Johannesburg and the wider development of South Africa.
Please note: Mine tours are subject to operational availability and attraction safety requirements.
4. Gold Reef City Heritage Experience
After the underground experience, spend some time exploring the surrounding heritage areas of Gold Reef City.
Depending on the day's operating schedule and your selected tour option, there may be an opportunity to see additional heritage attractions or enjoy a short refreshment break.
Theme park rides are not included in this tour unless specifically selected and stated in your booking.
5. Lunch Break
Enjoy lunch at a suitable restaurant or food outlet before continuing to the Apartheid Museum.
Lunch is not included in the standard tour price, unless your selected package specifically includes a meal.
Your guide can recommend suitable options based on your preferences.
6. Apartheid Museum
Continue to the Apartheid Museum, one of Johannesburg's most important historical and cultural institutions.
Allow approximately two hours to explore the museum and its exhibitions.
The museum takes visitors through the complex history of apartheid, including racial classification, segregation, forced removals, political resistance, violence, the 1976 uprising, the liberation struggle, Nelson Mandela's release, negotiations and the transition to democratic South Africa.
This part of the tour provides an opportunity for reflection and a deeper understanding of the historical forces that shaped modern South Africa.
